June 2007. A business conversation started to derail into gossiping about a person not present.
It was a moment I will never forget; it was the moment a sales director got all of my respect.
As she was the one saying to stop talking about the person, as he was not present.
And to share the information directly with him when he would be there; so that he could hear and understand what was stated and respond upon it if necessary.
In times of all kinds of teamwork in organizations, of creating coaching cultures and the need of trust and respect; more than ever I advise people in organizations to be self-aware and self-critical; to be gentle to others, as we are all humans; and …to
stop talking about people and start talking with people.
